AI Hopes and Industrial Decline Fuel Germany's Startup Boom

In fact, it's a record for German startups. According to the information from the economy ministry, over 3,000 companies were established during the first half of 2026. This is a 52% increase from the last six months. The surprise is the source of the energy: a weak industrial economy.

German Startups Hit an All-Time High

Germany's start-up landscape was known to be conservative and small. This is rapidly changing. There are two reasons that experts give for this: increased capital and the spread of artificial intelligence around the world. Approximately one in three of the new businesses are related to AI. The top three markets for new businesses are software (28%), healthcare (9%) and food (6%).

Why AI Startups in Germany Are Growing

The answer is simple – demand. Businesses must reduce their costs and automate manual tasks, and AI startups are selling just that. One such company is Langdock, which is based in Berlin and is dedicated to assisting businesses in integrating AI. It was established three years ago with some 60 employees and estimated revenues of €50m ($56m). There is true openness to new solutions within existing companies," says Hendrik Hofstadt, the chief technology officer of the company.

German Industry Is Under Pressure

There's a serious background. The German Economic Institute IW projects that Germany will have lost some 400,000 industrial jobs by 2025, mostly because of China's competition. Big industry players like Thyssenkrupp and automakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes have taken a beating.

Those are all real workers and families behind those numbers. A decline in the labour market has also driven talented individuals out of safe corporate jobs. Some are now starting their own companies. The timing is right as large sections of industry are struggling to survive, says Verena Pausder, president of the German Startup Association.

Not Every New Startup Is About AI

Other fields are being developed by their founders. Menstruflow is a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device developed by Polina Sergeeva in 2023 to relieve menstrual pain. Her sales increased by 300% over the previous year in the first quarter and she now wants to get certified as a medical person and work in retail stores.

Paulina Lutz quit her six-figure position in VC to found Nghty, a Berlin lingerie brand, which was launched in December 2024. It now has two collections, and its first pop-up location.

Venture Capital in Germany: Growth and a Gap

Funding is rising. According to Startup Monitor, the amount of VC funding raised in German startups between January and September, amounted to more than €8 billion, which is a higher amount than the total VC funding raised in 2025. However, the difference between the U.S. and here is stark. In the same time, only €5.7 billion were raised by German AI startups. The total investment raised by US startups in AI is almost €308 billion.

There is also a lack of confidence. Only approximately one third of the companies surveyed (around 1,800) found Germany to be an attractive market for business.

The Startup and Scaleup Strategy

The government is on the move. In July, a Startup and Scaleup Strategy was adopted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet that contains 152 measures. They address all aspects, from start to scale. The plan targets to streamline the bureaucracy and attract fresh private investment in technology, biotechnology and defence.

The risk is evident. But if young companies move to raise capital elsewhere, then the ideas resulting from the German work will generate value elsewhere, warns Timo Wollmershaeuser of the Ifo Institute.

What Comes Next

Record start-up founding is a good indicator, not an absolute certainty. Germany must now retain these companies, enable them to grow and bridge the funding deficit. If it is successful, the nation's start-up environment may be a new driver of the country's economy. Otherwise, the boom could be useful to other markets.
