You've heard about IPTV. You have heard the abbreviations - STBEmu, Stalker Portal, Xtream Codes. You do not know what any of it means. That's fine. By the conclusion of this paper, you will.
What IPTV Actually Is (And Why It Matters)
Internet Protocol Television is the abbreviated form of IPTV. It is a technology of transmitting TV signals via an internet connection as an alternative to a conventional satellite dish or cable line. You are not getting a broadcast signal, you are streaming video data straight to your device, the same can be said of music or browsing the web.
The international IPTV market has increased at a very high rate in the last decade with the number of households in the world who use some form of internet-based televisions being in hundreds of millions. The difference between IPTV and services such as Netflix is that they do not duplicate the form of the live television, such as channel programming, schedules, and electronic program guides, only with IP becoming the means of delivery.
Getting IPTV content requires three items: IPTV provider subscription, a compatible device and player application. This is where Xtream Codes, Stalker Portal, and STBEmu come in the picture.
STBEmu: The App That Emulates a Set-Top Box
STBEmu is an Android program that pretends to be a Mag set-top box - a real-world device that has been traditionally used to access the services of an IPTV. S in its name represents Set-Top Box. The app basically dupes an IPTV server to believe that it is communicating to a dedicated hardware device, when it is actually running on a smartphone, tablet, or Android TV box.
STBEmu also links to an IPTV service via what is referred to as a Stalker Portal a server-side middleware system. You use a portal URL when you configure STBEmu, which the IPTV subscription has given you. The app will then request that portal and will be authenticated with a device MAC address and will then retrieve the list of channels, EPG (electronic program guide) and video-on-demand library.
One important fact: STBEmu involves the use of MAC address authentication. IPTV provider assigns a unique MAC address of your account. The portal will not activate in case the MAC address of STBEmu does not match with the one that is registered in the server. That is why a lot of STBEmu users experience issues with activation it has not been registered or incorrectly entered.
Stalker Portal: The Middleware Behind the Stream
The Stalker Portal is not a downloadable application. It is an infrastructure that is a server-based middleware software originally created by a company named Infomir that resides between the content of your IPTV provider and the applications or devices that you watch it on.
Imagine Stalker Portal is the back-end program of an IPTV service. It handles user accounts, channels packages, limits access to what each subscriber may see and talks to client applications, such as STBEmu. By communicating with a provider through STBEmu and a portal URL, it is talking to a Stalker Portal installation in the server of the provider.
IPTV setups using stalkers have a defined set of workflow. The client application makes a handshake request to the portal address. The portal compares the MAC address with the database. In case the address is authorized, it provides a token. The token is then utilized in all other requests - loading channels, getting the EPG, streams.
Such architecture is not identical to other options of IPTV delivery and has certain implication: you cannot share a Stalker Portal subscription amongst devices in the same way that you can with certain other formats since each connection is associated with a registered MAC address.
Xtream Codes: The Alternative IPTV Protocol
Xtream Codes is also an entirely new IPTV panel system - and it happens to be one of the most popular in the industry. Where Stalker Portal is authenticating through MAC address, Xtream IPTV is authenticated through username and password system.
Xtream Codes connection needs three details, a URL of a server, a username, and a password. These are the credentials that your IPTV subscription service offers. When opened into an appropriate player, the application reads an M3U playlist and an XMLTV EPG feed - two standardised formats that are practically all recognised by IPTV players.
Since Xtream Codes is based on the standard username/password authentication, it can be used in a significantly expanded number of applications on IPTV players. Such applications as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, and GSE Smart IPTV all allow logging in with native Xtream Codes. You just enter the URL, user name and password and the rest will automatically do the work.
Portability is one of the practical benefits of Xtream IP TV in comparison to Stalker Portal installations. Your Xtream credentials are compatible with various devices at the same time (depending on the connection limits of your provider), and you do not need to use a MAC address on each.
STBEmu vs. Xtream IPTV: Choosing the Right Approach
The two modes are IPTV content providers. The correct decision will play out based on what your provider accepts and what is the device you are operating.
In case your IPTV provider provides portal URL, you will use the STBEmu (or another compatible Mag device) and Stalker Portal authentication. In case the provider provides a username, password and server URL, then you are using Xtream Codes and you have a broader choice of compatible players.
There are certain IPTV providers who provide both options. Xtream IPTV would be simpler to configure and more device-compatible, in general, but STBEmu with Stalker Portal might provide a more organized, Mag-like interface, which is more to the liking of some users.
A Note on Legal Considerations
The IPTV technology is also completely legal. Applications such as STBEmu are legal software with justifiable purposes, which are testing, development and services to access licensed IPTV services. Legal and illegal services used Xtream Codes as a panel system, which was later prosecuted by the legal authorities in 2019.
The law of a particular IPTV subscription is conditioned by the provider. Authorized services - services who have been licensed the content that they carry are legal. The unlicensed services which duplicate copyrighted materials without the right owners permission are not. The user has the duty when selecting an IPTV to ensure that he or she is licensed.
The first step would be to understand STBEmu, Stalker Portal and Xtream IPTV. It is your choice as to what you do with that knowledge.
