Thousands of individuals download STBemu every week, start an Xtream IPTV client, and type in the URL of a portal and wonder why their streams are buffering, crashing, or just not loading at all. The problem isn't the service. It's the setup.
This tutorial shows the actual mechanics of the IPTV, STBemu, the Stalker portal protocol, and Xtream codes - and how to get them to interoperate, once and for all.
What IPTV Actually Is (And Why It's Not What You Think)
IPTV means the Internet Protocol Television. You are not getting a broadcast signal on your satellite dish or cable but instead get video streams through your internet connection. That's it. The information is provided by a server. Your stream is requested by your device. The server delivers it.
It is the confusion among people in the way that the delivery is organized. Two protocols are currently preeminent in the IPTV world, which include Stalker portal (STBemu) and Xtream codes. They are all used to the same overall purpose, which is to bring live TV and on-demand content to your screen but operate differently, and your application must conform to your provider protocols.
STBemu and the Stalker Portal: How They Connect
STBemu (Set-Top Box Emulator) is an Android application that pretends to act like an actual hardware set-top box with the Mag brand. One of the first devices to be designed specifically to work with IPTV was the Mag boxes created by Infomir, and employed a middleware system called the Stalker portal.
You do not enter a username and a password when configuring STBemu. You are going into a portal URL - a web address that is an address to a Stalker middleware server. The server will identify your MAC address and authenticate and provide your content.
The most important part that most individuals fail to realize is that STBemu identifies itself by a MAC address. The default range of MAC addresses in the app may already be occupied by other users on the most popular portals. In case your portal is not loading, the first part of the profile that needs to be altered is MAC address. Enter the randomize option or request your IPTV provider to provide a MAC address that they have registered on the system.
An appropriate STBemu portal is as follows:
- Portal Web Address: c/ (or c:PORT)/ of yourprovider.com.
- MAC address: You are being offered or registered by your service.
- DNS: Fast public DNS, such as 1.1.1.1 is used to prevent a portal resolution failure.
When the portal URL and MAC address are matched, STBemu will then authenticate with the Stalker server and automatically will load your channel list, EPG (electronic program guide) and VOD library.
Xtream IPTV: Username, Password, URL
The Xtream codes system is different. It does not employ MAC-based authentication, instead it employs a standard username and password that is provided by the provider. This further increases its portability across apps - any IPTV player which is capable of decrypting Xtream codes can decrypt with the same accounts.
Your provider will send you Xtream logins in form of the following:
- URL: http://yourprovider.com:PORT
- Username: youruser
- Password: yourpass
Native apps to Xtream IPTV, such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, and others, have a specific Xtream input screen. On opening those three fields, your complete playlist, categories and catch-up TV are downloaded straight off the server by the app.

Stalker Portal vs. Xtream: Which One to Use?
This is all based on what your IPTV provider gives you - not your liking.
In case you were provided with a portal URL by your provider, use STBemu or any other Stalker-compatible player. Provided they have provided you with a username, a password and a server URL, then use one that is compatible with Xtream. Others are able to support both protocols. Xtream is, in general, more portable across devices and easier to control in that case.
The Stalker portal system has one useful benefit: the playlist is served by the server - you are not managing an M3U file. Flexibility is one of the practical benefits of Xtream: using the same set of credentials, it is possible to use it on phones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming boxes without any MAC-related registration.
The Setup Mistakes That Kill Your Stream
The majority of IPTV issues are reduced to four things:
Wrong protocol match. Xtream credentials not accepted using STBemu. Choose the correct application to the correct system.
MAC address conflicts. STBemu will blank portal a defaulted MAC that has already been occupied or issue an authentication error. Randomize it.
Port errors. IPTV servers would hardly ever be running on port 80. In case your portal URL is not loading and it does not contain a port number, request your provider to provide the right port.
DNS issues. A sluggish or non-functioning DNS may cause a portal URL to completely fail. Switch your device DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
Final Thought
STBemu, Stalker portal, or Xtream codes of IPTV are not that complex when you realize what each of these parts has. The portal is just an address. Your name is the MAC or username. The content is stored in the server. Get those three things in the right order and it is all good.
The majority of those who claim that IPTV does not work have an issue with set up, rather than an issue with the service. Now you know the difference.
