Instagram is the social media that is building its bet in an environment where social media seems to have become overcrowded, on the idea of connecting with others on a familiar level: a shared interest. The recently added Instagram Picks feature is set to guide friends in what they might have in common in a less tedious and cyclical way of scrolling aimlessly and taking guesses as to what interests them.
In one of its recent reports, TechCrunch revealed that Meta has officially stated that Instagram Picks is actively developed and on their way to a wide-scale international launch. The feature was initially noticed by the developer Alessandro Paluzzi who posted initial screenshots on X (previously Twitter). The pictures present a clear strategy: the users indicate the specific interests and Instagram identifies the friends that have common interests.
Such a move coincides with the most recently expressed vision of CEO Adam Mosseri who announced publicly that as early as 2025 the Instagram experience will be built around creativity, authentic communication, and personal connection. By exposing shared interests, it seems that Instagram is also shoving back to its origins with regards to people engaging with others and not the content being fed to them by an algorithm.
How Instagram Picks Works
Based on the early sneak peeks, the method is easy:
- You select your interests in a rotating collection.
- Make your friend list get scanned by the app.
- Immediately know what others like or any similar tastes, be it photography, cookery, traveling or specialized hobb.
This direct means of delivery is an alternative to generic algorithmic suggestive that Instagram implements. Rather than showing lists of potential connections based on who you might know or even otherwise in-trend content, the Instagram Picks feature constructs an individual, taste-oriented network graph, which effectively facilitates easy and organic communications and partnerships by making certain that there is relevant and potentially interesting content that can be discussed.
Why Now?
Instagram is succumbing to pressure to retain users as its rivals such as TikTok emerge. Short-form video will continue being a priority, but Picks shows that Meta believes in more meaningful and relationship-based engagement.
The launch is however, at a dicey time. The site is undergoing scathing reviews on its recently added Maps, which some of its users say invades privacy by showing sensitive location information including homes of prominent people. There has been hue and cry about the feature removal.
This is the background against which Instagram Picks may work as a counterexample in terms of reputation a certain good, a socially oriented, non‑controversial thing. However, it also has the danger of becoming the category of too many features not asked to. A problem Instagram has heard elsewhere.
User Reaction Will Decide Its Fate
Other critics are sure that such a thing as Instagram Picks feature may, indeed, improve the experience as it will help launch some conversation that would not accompany a person otherwise. Some say that experiments at this scale are already bloat on the core product of Instagram and efforts to them should be focused on polishing current tools.
In the past, new functions have performed well on Instagram and achieved this when they fulfilled three criteria:
- They address an obvious user need.
- They can be used in a few seconds.
- They increase physical social value.
Should Picks deliver on these promises, it may end as a sticky but low profile addition to the ecosystem of the app. Otherwise, it will become another experiment on Instagram to be left.
The Bigger Picture
In addition to engagement metrics, the Instagram Picks option is an indicator of a wider product philosophy change. Meta seems to be re-investing in products that connect people more deeply as opposed to viral scale alone. It is an admission that algorithms cannot build long term loyalty in isolation; humans remain in a place where they get along well with others.
Nevertheless, the problem of Instagram is to provide the right balance between innovation and trust of users. The history of the platform has demonstrated that each new tool is not only the quality of its technical implementation, but it is also the ability to fit into the cultural and privacy norms of the community.
